Darkvision IS NOT needed anymore
Really strange and I wonder if it's a bug or intended (but then why don't change the wording on Darkvision itself?): Darkvision does nothing anymore because there seems to be no penalty for not being able to see in the dark?!

I remember in EA when dark areas were a real pain in the buttocks for characters without a source of light/darkvision. If wonder if they thought that was too much? But why no communication?

Compared to EA, I'm landing the majority of my attacks in final release versus 10-20% in EA.
tbh this makes me sad
I'm glad only Larian had a budget for big advertise campaign, so BG3 is the only CRPG that attracted people like you

I get what you mean and I'm partly happy (that darkness system can be VERY annoying for sure) but it's also something that can be played around and there are SOOO many options to navigate dark areas without any darkvision.
Eventhough I'll probably eat my words: I think it's an interesting challenge IF the system works. Sadly in EA the enemy was often "Obscured" even if you were standing next to it in a well-lit room.

Yeah one of the main problems was visual representation to the viewer. It's just counter-intuitive when you tell me that characters can't see here yet I see everything perfectly well and it's not even remotely dark.

Maybe you guys just have brightness turned up too hard, when I switch between party members with and without darkvision the game immediately turns brighter/darker :HappyOne:

I haven't noticed. I'm a Warlock with Devil's Sight.

Oh? Yeah never noticed that. My monitors are calibrated to around 110 cd/m2 so definitely not too bright as it hurts my eyes.

Having some sort of magical light source is infinitely better than dark vision. There are several can trips in the game that give you better vision. I'm playing with a relatively dark game and I can assure you that dark vision pales in comparison to just having another light source.

So in the end which is it, do you have disadvantage on attack if you don't have darkvision and no light source ?
I kind of want to play a human paladin since I don't like how the other "better" races look
Darkvision sort of just creates a cone of visibility through dark areas in front of the character that has it. Though, to be fair, that's still more useful than infravision was in BG1-2, where it just kind of... turned characters and enemies red so you could see them a little better.

Sad to say but the wine brings the cheese...

Good question ... all in my party have natural Darkvision anyways.

In the end you should play what you want. There's no need not to play a human since you can easily purchase a ring early on that lets you see better in the dark and there's ample way to create lightsources.

Honestly wish they made it all VERY dark like it supposedly was before EA before people moaned about it in testing and make light sources more mandatory.

Ive not had a single disadvantage due to darkness in release and its pretty sad how useless the mechanic is now because whiners didnt want to adapt to mechanics. (3/4 of my party dont even have darkvision.)

Stop with your name-calling, it's no ones fault.
The fact that the wording on Darkvision still stands proves that the mechanics is currently just bugged and might have been deactivated bc. of problems (I remember that in EA targets sometimes being obscured even with good light sources, standing directly next to the target) but since this doesn't hurt anyone (it helps everyone really) it might not be on their first agenda.

In this video, Lae'zel has the Everburn Blade, which illuminates the vicinity of her.
But regardless, for melee attacks, dark vision is really irrelevant, at least for humans (idk which other races don't formally have darkvision), because they get 2 meters of darkvision despite formally NOT having darkvision. It's only relevant for ranged attacks (which suck, so it's really irrelevant).
