I'm glad only Larian had a budget for big advertise campaign, so BG3 is the only CRPG that attracted people like you
I get what you mean and I'm partly happy (that darkness system can be VERY annoying for sure) but it's also something that can be played around and there are SOOO many options to navigate dark areas without any darkvision.
Eventhough I'll probably eat my words: I think it's an interesting challenge IF the system works. Sadly in EA the enemy was often "Obscured" even if you were standing next to it in a well-lit room.
Having some sort of magical light source is infinitely better than dark vision. There are several can trips in the game that give you better vision. I'm playing with a relatively dark game and I can assure you that dark vision pales in comparison to just having another light source.
I kind of want to play a human paladin since I don't like how the other "better" races look
Good question ... all in my party have natural Darkvision anyways.
In the end you should play what you want. There's no need not to play a human since you can easily purchase a ring early on that lets you see better in the dark and there's ample way to create lightsources.
Ive not had a single disadvantage due to darkness in release and its pretty sad how useless the mechanic is now because whiners didnt want to adapt to mechanics. (3/4 of my party dont even have darkvision.)
Stop with your name-calling, it's no ones fault.
The fact that the wording on Darkvision still stands proves that the mechanics is currently just bugged and might have been deactivated bc. of problems (I remember that in EA targets sometimes being obscured even with good light sources, standing directly next to the target) but since this doesn't hurt anyone (it helps everyone really) it might not be on their first agenda.
But regardless, for melee attacks, dark vision is really irrelevant, at least for humans (idk which other races don't formally have darkvision), because they get 2 meters of darkvision despite formally NOT having darkvision. It's only relevant for ranged attacks (which suck, so it's really irrelevant).
