Wizard Necromancer: rubbish?
I wanted to make a pure Necromancer build and wizard seemed like a good choice because they have the option to empower necromancer spells.

There are not many Necromancer spells. The ones that exist don't seems that good and are close combat spells.

Is this a poorly implemented subclass?

It is like that in tabletop too. You are limited to a few spells like ray of sickness and such. A lot of the wizard subclasses were implemented 1:1 and thus such and are lack luster. Still animate dead is their biggest advantage being able to animate more then others, giving them more damage and hp

It starts off really bad but totally Claps later on. Im in the end game and just had a HUGE fight. Im talking like 60 or so enemy's running around. Guess who had about 60 zombies running around by the end of it?
Thats right, I did >:D

Every time a zombie kills a medium or small humanoid it makes another zombie. You can have an endless, PC melting, game stuttering amount of absolutely free zombies running around, as long as the enemys keep coming.
Then you can sit back, have a tea and a smoke and laugh, laugh and laugh as your little buddys wipe the map clean and all you had to do was cast 1 spell and enjoy the show.

Find the necromancer book, crystal and much later translation key for an epic instant army if zombies aren't your thing.

Evocation, Divination, and Necromancy look like the three strongest wizard subclasses. They nerfed conjuration from what I saw so Necro looks like the only build for summoning.

It really took me by surprise. Like I was saying, necro is total garbage until you get your first summons. then it turns most fights into a cake walk/world war Z sim.

The problem with Wizard is that you need to find scrolls to learn spells (aside from those you pick up on lvl up).

Once you get the spells to make your army of the dead, just getting one kill will help snowballing the fight in your favor very quickly.

Most casters are rather weak before lvl 5-6.

Warlock to me seems very boring. I might play warlock for the first couple of acts and reroll necro later though. My midget also lacks mobility, but wizard has teleports and all kinds of other utility.

This is what I had in mind. Can you keep these zombies up indefinitely or do you find that you need to rush to make more before rest reset?

They last for about as long as the fight usually does, like 10 turns or so. The ones you actually summon are around until you do a long rest or they die, though.

Right now I have 6 ghouls and 3 zombies running around freely and they are here to stay. Im pretty sure my summon limit is tied to my level but I dont know exact numbers. I might be running around with a squad when I could have an entire army lol
Thats not even including all the other stuff I could have summoned right now also. Its just too much micro-managing for me. Ive been up for 24 hrs trying to finish this but it just keeps going and getting better haha

Abyss Beckoners works well in combat if y don't want to micro-manage all summons (and it also gives resistance to all damage except Psychic damage) but you have to deactivate manually the effect outside of combat.

I am sure 5th Edition changed how undead and mind-affecting spells work but it infuriates me that the Abyss Beckoners make SKELETONS "crazy." Necromancers should be able to use those gloves with no downsides (yes I am playing a necromancer and hoping for every cool synergy I can find, why do you ask)

I like minion-based necromanes as well. Outside of the D&D rules, DOS/WOTR supports permanent minions quite well.
Within the D&D rules, BG2, NWN, IWD, Planescape are much better than this game. I think the main reason is that they didn't implement a death domain cleric. That's the superior way to get a skeleton army going in D&D rules.
death domain cleric would have been amazing

Wizard necro 6 lvl + death cleric or Oathbreaker paladin
