As I said, read the quest, it literally tells you, what did you expect would happen?
Yeah, i imagined. Dunno, kinda dissapointing that if you meet him without Astarion he basically tells you "I have to question Astarion about something" and if you tell him where can he meet Astarion you instantly lose him as a follower (Specially that it happened after 2 long rests, so we coulnd't reload without loosing a decent amount of progress).
You can warn astarion after telling the Gur
Act 3 spoilers
You see him again later in the game just not as a companion or even himself, you'll see in Act 3
Grandel is a minion of Cazador, he also kills the Gur people you can encounter in act 3 if he lives after act 1
