I resisted to the VERY end, kept my humanity in tact and was able to get a mostly good ending, but that's only because I skipped a few important side quests
Depends on what you personally consider a reward illithid powers are rather...powerful, like you can sometimes do BASE 80 damage with some of them before modifiers

Doing the right thing the right way is always going to be the harder road. That's just life.
Honestly, don't know, never used them beyond the first two mandatory uses
But I think there is more a "point of no return" type situation with that, and you'll know it when you get to it
