How do I get Brithvar to talk to me?

I'm trying to team up with Brithvar to make the Nere fight a little more manageable but he refuses to talk to me. I've tried talking to him immediately upon entering the base, after learning about the situation with Nere, and after learning about the gnome with the explosives, but he always tells me to piss off. Did I do something earlier on to make him not want to talk to me? I'm not sure what's going on.

Yeah I was not able to solicit any help before fighting Nere. Tried talking to everyone I could find, almost everyone was passive-aggressive hostile or captive deep gnomes too scared to do ♥♥♥♥. I was level 5 doing this fight and I was pretty worried when it kicked off but I kicked the ♥♥♥♥ out of them. I had my guy ranged Gloomstalker, Wyll, Shadowheart and Karlach. Balanced though, not Tactician.

Little late for the party but I found the answer! You must first drop any for of gunpowder items (granades and sachels) that you carry (because you need them to advance the quest AFTER you talk to Brithvar). Then you must talk to Stone Guard Kur not Brithvar himself.

is this the Deep Dwarf Fight? because if so the best solution I've found is to have most of the party be at the bottom next to the campfire, blow the boss up with a bomb which will knock him down and either kill him or leave him at very low health, and then Lynch him with the rest of the party

Question: Brithvar turn's against you eventually right? There is no way to make him friendly?

Brithvar can be made to fight alongside you against Nere and leave peacefully without the deep gnomes. The latter takes a dialog skill check.

You can have smokepowder satchels or bombs when approaching him, but it seems you can't have the special concentrated smokepowder keg that you can get from the runaway deep gnome from what I've read.

EDIT: You must free the gnomes and leave the area (such as back to the lake shore underdark). Otherwise, most things you try to loot will be considered stealing. When you return to Grymforge, they'll all be gone.

i never even got the option to fight nere, when i showed up there Brithvar was enslaving Nere's corpse, Nere doesn't fight me.
