My 2 cents is that it's obvious that the more you delve into Mind Flayer powers, the more you will lose your character; unless your character concept was to be an Illithid in the first place.
There will definitely be an ending where the character completely resists the parasite and remains "pure" and another where he/she embraces it completely. That's 2 out of the supposed 17,000 endings.
I'm curious about this too. Could you go a little more into detail as for how the story to differ? I don't want to cut out huge parts of the game but my inner voice tells me my char wouldn't trust it.
So in my personal playthrough I kept refusing, so I don't know the extent to how much it changes
Again, it's not cutting OUT stuff by saying "no I don't want the tadpoles" it's just a parallel route with different options
Edit: This type of game, you need to stop thinking about it as "what will I miss out on"
You're going to replay it, so make the choices you WANT to make for the first playthrough, see what happens
Then make different choices in your next playthrough, or create a roleplaying ruleset for yourself
What is your characters motives and desires? That's how you should play the game. How do you in-vision your characters personality?
If you're a virtuous do gooder you wouldn't indulge the powers. Chaotic Good character might if they thought the benefits did more good than harm.
You can also view it through the lens of your character stats. Is your character wise? or unwise? Are they intelligence or unintelligent?
however, i think i will embrace it in a future play. can't wait to see the difference
