Just continue down the story line for a while until the dream person tells you more stuff
It's definitely a choice, and has consequences if you go down either route, but it's YOUR choice, don't worry, the game may be like "yoo do this, you'll be great!" but it's like going the Mythic Legendary path in Pathfinder, aka the "I'll do it myself on my own"
Choose to, or not. Up to you, live with the consequence
Or you can do multiple play through since there are supposedly over 1,000 endings, but choose different options next time :-)
The reason for that is explained in the story. Honestly I haven't tried because supplies is always an issue, but I'm guessing.....no?
it unlocks a new class if I remember correctly, otherwise you're not "missing" anything, but the decisions will affect the way your companions view you, and there are some who will straight up leave
