I'm pretty sure the "I have no other choice but to go back to Avernus" refers to what'll eventually happen during your ending after the final boss of Act 3, not to some kind of soon-to-occur unavoidable game-over akin to Gale going thermonuclear if you leave him dead for too long.
So you probably haven't "broken" the game per-se, but you've likely locked yourself into only that one ending unless you become a mind flayer during the finale.
