Auntie Ethels masks hostile after I kill her
So I managed to kill her in the tea house, went down below and I cannot talk to the masks at all, just have the attack command but I understand I can save the Mask of Regret but no way to speak. I am wearing the mask but it doesn't help. They don't attack me but are only targetable

While this isn't a fix its a workaround: I killed Ethel before she got to her lair and I found all the masks hostile. I put masks on my party and still had a sword when targeting.

I was able to save the regret mask by clicking on the ground near her, as my character is running toward her I click on the mask of regret with the greyed out sword (as though to attack) before my character comes to a stop and it started dialogue instead of hitting her.

Hi guys i found here because i was only able to attack the masks after killing auntie upstairs. However when i desperately switched my control to a character who WASN'T in the fight which i killed Ethels, the masks all of a sudden turned neutral and talkable!
Might need more tests, but this methods works for me :lunar2019piginablanket:

I had the same issue, just go over to the mask of regret and press “attack”
It won’t actually attack, it’ll open up a dialogue to talk with her. But you have to do that first before talking to any of the other masks, if you do you WILL actually attack the mask of regret if you try and talk to her after speaking with any of the others.

It's not that kind of game. Kill everything, loot, rinse, repeat. find switch to open door, kill everything, rinse, repeat...

There is so little else you can actually do in this game, it does not offer or react to choice in general, except for mainline quest choices about who you side with in bigger conflicts...

It's just not that kind of game where quest resolution other than 'kill everything' is anticipated or supported by the writers.......
Dude what game are you playing? Def not bg3. There are so many ways to do pretty much everything.

Sorry for necro-ing this thread, but I ran into a weird version of this bug too, and I kind of need some help here. I've tried some workarounds from this thread in attempt to find a workaround for it (y'all have been very helpful, kudos to everyone testing out solutions here). But sadly, nothing seems to work so far; the game actually attacks in my case instead of starting dialogue, and going behind the cone of vision didn't work either. And since Google gave me no answers on the matter either, I decided to ask for help here.

It doesn't matter whether I kill or spare Ethel or not for the bug to trigger; I knock the mask people out instead of killing them, fight Ethel, then go back after winning, and only THEN remove the masks (like you're supposed to if you're sparing them). But If I long rest after doing the scene with Mayrina and the wand, they still have the Emphereal Whispers buff despite not weaking the masks, and are hostile instead of friendly.
I've had this bug hit several saves so far; I know for a fact that you can actually save all of the mask people (I've actually done this on 2 saves that were made on older versions of the game, pre-patch 6 and 7), but this really puts a damper on the quest for me. Does anyone have any other workarounds that they've tested?

I'll allow it :steamhappy:

Anyway, I think the bug stems from the action of removing the masks.

If you remove them after knocking them out but before killing the hag, they die, plain and simple.

If you remove them after killing the hag, I think there's a chance this bugs out. On all my playthroughs I leave the masks on after killing the hag and come back after a long rest. They're friendly, wandering around, still wearing the masks.

Three of them are already too far gone to be of any use, they actually feel upset that they can't feel/hear Auntie anymore, so perhaps removing the masks is something that turns them hostile.

Only one of them, the gnome (i think) is sane and she can be spoken to, but I don't remove her mask either. Just don't do it, I guess.

Thanks so much for your answer; knowing what causes the bug from is half the battle, after all. :steamhappy: I'll definitely try just leaving the masks in their inventories on my next playthrough; my current run seems to have fallen victim already (I just tried out some stupid stuff like reverse pickpocketing the masks back in their inventories, but it sadly didn't work). Figured that I'd just be that unlucky if a player can run into it by chance, though; so far it's literally affected every save except those two super-old, already complete runs. I mean, knowing my luck on gaming-related bugs, I'm just relieved that it's not actually a game-breaking one or something, and that my saves are not in any danger.

You're completely right about the dialogue of the mask people, by the way; I've talked to all of them on those 2 playthroughs. I know who you mean on the sane person; it's a Halfling lady (she actually is a short race, so you weren't that far off) and she's actually so nice.

If you bypass the Masks, (sneak past them) and Kill Auntie Ethel at the end without killing the Masks she summons, You will be able to talk to them. The Mask of Regret is the only one who have meaningful dialog, as the others won't believe you Auntie Ethel is dead. To be fair, neither will the Mask of Regret, but she is seen in the conversation Dialog not wearing the mask, meaning she took it off. However, if you try to knock the other Masks unconscious to remove their masks, The Mask of Regret will become Temporarily Hostile, wearing the mask again, and attacking you with the other Masks.

I venture to say the reason the Masks still have the buff, even though you defeated Auntie Ethel, is she isn't quite dead. I don't want to spoil anything, but you'll see what I'm talking about later in the game.
