Sometimes you just miss a couple times in a row despite good odds.
I think Shadowheart because who cares at that point. I was level 4 at that point...I really think you're probably meant to face them at maybe level 3.
I was able to one shot him with my paladin. Don't see what all the fuss is about.
Went in with me a sorc, wynn as lock\sorc, karalck barbarian and shadowheart as clearic.
Anders started the turn with 1-shotting shadowheart. I did ♥♥♥♥-all damage to him cause everything missed.
Turn two he one-shot (with his two attacks) my main char, and from there on out I was straight ♥♥♥♥♥♥.
It was a total wipefest in 3 turns. EZ RNG.
Unless he critted every attack, sounds like you're level 2. That sounds a little low for the encounter. Or maybe start the fight with a sneak attack or do something different than a head on battle when you are low level.
Anyway I had Wyll, Shadowheart, and Karlach in my party pretty much using their nub gear and I was planning on strategically placing them one at a time before walking her through the door and kicking off the fight. . .Except as soon as I opened the front door she was too close and combat was immediate with Wyll and Shadowheart not even on the landing outside the tollhouse door.
I got lucky with initiative and all of my characters got to move before any of the enemies which is probably what saved me. My main is a Wood Elf Rogue with a rapier and from the cutscene position he was given he had just enough movement to reach the mage in the back, drop into stealth, and backstab her. I got lucky with a crit which left her at like ten or fifteen HP. Originally I was going to send Karlach after her because her 4th level feat is Mageslayer but so much for that plan. I sent Wyll into the room and he had just enough movement to get up the ladder and he cantrip blasted the ranger, Shadowheart and Karlach attacked the ranger also and managed to kill her.
The mage went next, because her health was low she didn't move away and instead fired off a spell with disadvantage and missed then threw some sort of potion attack that hit. I took like ten damage which was like half my health but my rogue would finish her off the text turn. My memory was that that mage was the worst of the three but man that Doo Doo Head is much more beefy than I had remembered. Anders came out swinging and just chopped the ♥♥♥♥ out of Karlach and even had an attack left over for Shadowheart but her AC was like 17 and he missed. She was able to tank him for another turn although she took a lot of damage while Wyll kept blasting and I got my rogue in position to give a sneak attack that left him at like 3HP - at that point I brought in Wyll's Imp who had been invisible and delivered that little bit of damage needed to finish off the encounter -which is my usual tactic with that guy. Since most enemies can't detect him, I just hold in reserve until an enemy is super low on health and then bring him for a kill.
Some encounters are worse than others depending upon what type of character you are playing and to be honest I am not sure how I would beat a lot of these with anything other than a rogue. Getting enemies in a surprise round allows me to wipe sometimes entire encounters out first turn and I often take a lot of damage in fights I can't prep for first and can imagine getting wrecked pretty easily if I had been caught completely unaware for any of them.
I cast Enlarge on my warrior and went toe to toe with him while Sleeping the archer in the room and closing the door so the other archer wouldn't enter. Anders died in like two rounds then I made quick work of his archer buddy. The last guy was the most annoying because they kept running away but I eventually sneak attacked her to death too.
Sometimes I was fighting for my life, sometimes I mowed them like was nothing
