This is how it always worked with steam and lan gaming.
But two copies/two steam accounts work perfectly fine. Just invite her to your game or make the coop session visible to friends only (make sure she is in your steam friendlist beforehand) and she will be able to find you on the top of the server list and you are set.
and you can still play cross platform , using the direct connect ID
No difference to Steam version.
It is indeed rare and surprising to see DRM-free games on Steam. I only know of a handful like Wildermyth, RimWorld and Taurus. Basically those who are DRM-free by publisher per default.
