How to get out of jail?

I'm still learning this game. I accidentally stole something and my main character was sent to jail. I've spent the past hour trying to figure out a way to get him out legitimately with no luck. Can't find anything online either. How do I get out of jail?

it's usually not that difficult. there will be some destructable section of wall in your cell. once broken you can crawl through. here's the fun part... your party will no longer be following you. they will be wherever they were when you were arrested. you will lose your weapons and most of your inventory but not your gear. I have not figured out how to get them back. best advice, save before you try to steal something

Your inventory and "evidence" are right outside of the cell in chests, at least in the settlement where I am jailed.

Evidence chest has your gear. You have to sneak back into the jail and steal it.

Legitimately doesn't mean 'breaking out'. Anyway, I was looking for the same answer..
Got caught stealing a fishing pole, but there is no jailtime indication. And.... you can't even fish!

I got a lucky roll and picked the lock, and walked out
not sure what I was expecting but the guards killed me pretty much instantly, lol
then I just reloaded from an earlier save

I made the mistake of telling some lady about my quest and she apparently tells the guards your entire party was mistreating children and guards try to arrest you. Problem is, the arrest didn't trigger my first go through the refugee town so I encountered it like 10 hours later so reloading a previous save isn't really an option. Is there a way to get whatever character(s) doesn't pass the check out of prison without it being illegal?
