Edit: I have not spotted hypnotic pattern.
Like Sleep only lasts for a single round. Overall its the spellcasting side that's lagging behind.
Other spells cut out much earlier than they are supposed to. Granted that's only the first and second level ones so far as I haven't gotten to 5th yet, but it is noticable they... put a serious damper on them when they should not have.
Burning Hands and Thunder Wave the range on them has been seriously cut down.
They need to be powered back up to 5th Edition spell power.
There are very few AE spells below level 3, walls are typically level 4-6, great command would be 5, if it is in the game.
How effective are they? Depends on your DC and therefore your caster level and casting stat, 20 is possible at level 4. As expected, the enemies will save often, wasting your spell slot - around 50%, better if bosses. That is the main reason most casters go for evocations, since the targets will at least take half damage.
In this game I can pick up explosive barrels and carry them with me. They can be placed tactically and detonated together with several mobs, if the position allows for it. Very effective, if said mobs are currently peaceful and allow me to place them and take a few steps back. The hag and the goblin bosses can be trivialized that way. Probably not what you look for, though.
Grease and fire.
You're right, I do think of CC as AOE with status effects. I'll just edit the main post to better reflect what I'm looking for.
