in my experience, so far it looks like if you have two player characters, and shadowheart (for this example)
I play with MC1 and Shadow- whenever she has an event I am the one that talks to her- i get all the event dialogues etc. which opens up some more mundane dialogue after the fact about said event. I get both the approval ups from the events as well as from the extra dialogue.
MC2 does NOT get to have the event with shadow- BUT when talking to her after event, they have options to talk about the non event dialogue that is opened after the fact. at best all they will get is the slight approval ups from the extra dialogue.
If you want to romance the character im not sure if its REQUIRED to be the one doing all their events, but im pretty sure you need to have higher approval then the other characters- and you get the most during the events.
