When can I start eating tadpoles?

Ability tree is only available from keyboard. The game gives absolutely no hints that it even exists.

Yea you get the icon at top right of screen when you can start using the tadpoles

Guess I need to try to use the tadpole Illithid Wisdom a bit more.

you gotta get the polymorph potion from dumbledores bedroom (y'know wat to do to get there) and then u gotta drink it while looking into the eyes of a frog and transform into a frog. once you are a frog you gotta go to the pond with all the tadpoles and then you will have to play a mini game (dice rolls are based on your WIS cuz frogs are wise so buff WIS) to eat as many tadpoles as you cam.

There is a large red tadpole icon next to the minimap.....
