Lockpicking companion
Am I basically stuck with Astarion or can I get Shadowheart to perform this function well enough to get by? I'm not really digging Astarion's personality much and thinking about replacing him with Wyll.

If you are ok with multiclassing a companion its very easy to get yourself a lockpicker.
or you can spend a feat on it. Shadowheart already has guidance so that helps a bit.
You can respec any character with decent dex to have the sleight of hand skill - Shadowheart can do it just fine too. Laezel can use astral knowledge to gain proficiency in all DEX skills. Probably Astarion is your best bet for high DC locks. You know you can just warp to camp, switch him in, and when you leave you'll be in front of the lock? Why not just use him as a skill monkey so to speak like the pokemon you give all the HMs too. I think it's worth giving him a chance, his personality at least near the latter half of Act 1 gets less campy and more into his backstory. I'm playing in tactician and he's easily my most OP party member in combat, I'm stomping through it so far.

Aren’t there spells as well? I have a bard so I do all the talking, lock picking and pretty much everything. The clerics cantrip also gives you some extra points to make up for lacking high stats.

I find him aristocraticly annoying as well. I haven’t needed him though. He is an odd one for sure.

But all the characters have secrets.

I had respec shadowheart to make her more of a dex based ranged spellcasting cleric. Slight of hand being a dex based skill means she does get a small bonus to it. That and with her guidance. I have yet to be unable to open any lock with her. Sure I have failed more often with her, but you get lock picks and inspiration enough throughout the game I'm not worried about running out of chances to open locks.

the bard can lockpick fine enough for most things, if you encounter a very high DC just warp astarion in from camp and back out. it's really strange to me, is everyone limiting themselves to only 4 companions like you leave everyone else in camp permanently and never use them for a small situation?

Shadowheart is a Cleric of trickery so, she can lockpick for sure. However, once you reach level four you could give one of your other companions a feat that gives you a proficiency in lockpicking.

I lockpick on my pure wizard all of the time without using the knock spell lol

As long as it's wooden you can always just smash whatever it is down.

I get cha! I didn't vibe with him either but I recently found some stuff out about him that definitely explains his personality more! Lastly, at some point, I stopped trying to say right thing to certain characters [as myself] and just embraced the character I was actually playing. And the game got 100% more fun. Even Asterion was a riot to be around because I insulted him a few times and things got 100% more interesting.

You can pay Withers a few coins to respec any character or to hire a custom companion for you if you dont want to change the original characters classes, but all and all lockpicking is not that big of a deal, you can always save scum lol, but i will say that, Astarion is 100% a prick, but he gets better if you give him a chance.

On my current run my Karlach is still a barbarian but I gave her more dex so she can do it alright, and if any of your fighters get particularly beefy you can smash a lot of the boxes/doors

You can also just Smash open containers or so this person claims https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/comments/ypqiqc/benefit_to_lock_picking_vs_just_breaking_chests/

Probably:lunar2020thinkingtiger: worth testing out for yourself with a save or 2 though,

I'd get withers and just respec someone. This allows ANYONE to be whatever you need them to be, they will simply remain their "class" for story purposes (making gale a fighter won't stop him from using magic in cutscenes and such). Rogues and Bards make excellent lockpicks.

The MC can also be a dex/cha character with dual hand crossbows who can be pretty good at picking locks and be fairly good in conversations.

He won't have good STR, CON, INT, or WIS. But anything to do with DEX or CHA he can be fairly good at.

Also DEX/CHA means he can multiclass warlock and get the Great Old One patron who gives him mortal reminder. If you do the Champion subclass for fighter and get the Dark Justiciar helm, you're on your way to crit city with your hand crossbows and causing fear every time you crit.

Warlocks cast using CHA, so he can cast darkness which synergizes with the helmet.
