In the lower right corner of the screen when one of your friends starts a dialogue a little text should show saying "(character name) has initiated dialogue."
And you should be able to see on the left side, on the friend who initiated dialogue an ear icon, you can click on it to listen in on the conversation. If your friend has toggled on "Private Moment" on their screen you won't be able to listen in and will instead get a pop up telling you this moment is private.
There is an option in the settings to automatically make all dialogue "Public" to make it easier for everyone to listen in on each other.
Divinity 2 did a much better job of this.
