How does multiclassing work?
Hello, I'm just about done downloading the game and i am a little bit confused on the multiclass. I try to keep spoilers to a minimum so i intentionally didn't watch any of the trailers/dev talks. So aside from larian's own D:OS2, my only other frame of reference for CRPGs are Owlcat's Pathfinder games (100 hrs on Kingmaker, 700 hrs on WotR). As i understand, Pathfinder and D&D's rules are very similar. So in this game, i'd love to play something akin to pathfinder's Deliverer (basically divine assassins) and to achieve this im thinking of doing rogue/paladin multiclass. Would that sort of thing work? If not i'll probably go play Ranger.

Thanks

multiclassing is a trap unless you know what you're doing and even then it's questionable

if you played wrath its quite similar (as pathfinder is just D&D 3.X)

though rogue/pally probably doesn't mix amazingly ill be honest

So basically every level up you can select a different class to level?

speculative time-wasting spam about 5e pnp instead of bg3, with conclusions like "is it worth it? dunno". OK. if that's the answer after a huge article like that then the article was a waste of everyone's time.

With how Larian is approaching it, it's best to get to at least lvl 2-3 before even thinking about multiclassing. Even then, you need to make sure you're chosen 2nd class is leveled 2-3 or at least one under your character level because it seems to be a bit bugged. But rest assured it does indeed work.

I.E
I respec at withers while at lvl 5
take 4 levels in fighter and one in monk = bugs out and doesn't apply changes

respect at lvl 5
3 levels in fighter, 2 in monk, and it'll work just fine.

dull disclosure, I had that problem but my buddy didn't so I'm assuming there's a bug.

Now in terms of the game/meta. It's honestly more effiecient to do a 2/2 split in the early game if you're just aching to multiclass. But if you don't mind being patient, I don't recommend multiclassing before you have your first subclass. Larian programs some really malicious AI and the early game definitely sees the player benefit more by specializing in a specific class and performing a defined role in the team. thankfully respeccing is so cheap that they definitely had compulsive character build creators such as myself in mind.

The big danger of Multi-classing in DnD 5e is that you are pushing your class level 5 benefits further down the line (Second Attack for Martials, 3rd level spells for Casters, sneak dice for rogues.) Sometimes this can be worth it but you should be extremely sure that it is what you want (though with respec, this may be less of a problem)
Every time your character gains a level, you get to choose which class you'd like to level up.

Most abilities and features in the game are class-level dependent rather than character-level dependent, meaning that they only become more powerful when you increase the level of the class that grants you that feature or ability rather than your overall character-level, but there are a few exceptions, such as cantrips, which will continue to scale with your overall character-level regardless of how you split those levels between varipus classes.
