The way the spell is suppose to be used is create a zone where enemies won't go or will try to flee from letting your melee use opportunity attacks.
I've found it's a matter of positioning. If you don't put it in the right place it ends up just sitting there and not doing enough damage. You have to be able to actively move it around on its turn.
Even though Larian takes a lot of liberties with the game's adherence to 5th edition rules, Flaming Sphere is close in this game.
It only does it's area/aura damage to creatures that end their turn near it. Not when they start their turn or run past it.
Also, you should make a habit of clicking it off follow mode, as soon as you summon it.
Click the little horizontal link between your caster and the sphere, on the left hand side.
