The first quest of Karlach heavily goes against DnD lore and it really annoys me.

So obviously spoilers ahead.

Even if demons pass themselves for paladins, they cannot use paladins power in the lore. You need to be bound by one of the oaths for that and they are not.

It's really annoying that Larian just went freestyle with the lore, especially since they were hellbent on going with 5th Ed' which - in my opinion - is by far the lesser TTRPG.

You can be a Paladin to an evil deity, and still get smite and such. Asmodeus paladin was a thing for a while. That said theres a few ways to get smite without even being a Paladin (in game) so who knows.

They aren't getting their power from Tyr, but from Zariel. If you play as a Paladin, or Cleric of Tyr, you'll receive a vision when speaking to them that they're oathbreakers. I also kill them too quick, but I don't think they get any Paladin-specific moves? I normally kill Anders too quick to see if he has divine smite or something, but Oathbreakers can still use that anyways.

Deity doesn't even have to play into paladins in 5e. If you devote yourself to a cause, any cause, hard enough you get powers.

There are evil Paladins in D&D; in older editions they were called 'Antipaladins'.

It's 5e. Paladins aren't tied to alignment or anything, and clerics barely have a relationship with the gods. Anything that might require you to actually roleplay your character to a standard is unacceptable.

I do agree that this should have been an option when they allow you to play evil characters, and have an evil protag route (Dark Urge). Probably, it wasn't allowed because they don't want you being part of Shadowheart's storyline as an insider.

I mean, they might have some form of fiend blood in their ancestry somewhere but that does not make them evil. I can't find anything about tieflings not being able to be paladins?

oathbraker paladins under asmodeus and under zariel by proxy. as a dm is just npc magic, like you cannot be a lich or turn into a god, but an npc can.

remember asmodeus is a god. its portafolio are lies, machinations and being evil, zariel works under asmodeus in the hierarchy, if they made a deal with zariel they can get oaths under asmodeus sight, mechanically oathbrakers.

Oathbreakers cannot use regular paladin abilities, they use a specific set of abilities including necromancy spells. Zariel fake paladins use the Oath of Devotion abilities (IIRC).

In 5th edition lore paladins oaths are just something they've dedicated themselves to. So there's no reason a demon couldn't be a paladin.

Because now you choose an Oath and no longer a diety in 5E.
