You can each make your own characters, or play origin characters. You can journey together or walk around separately. We tend to have one companion we keep with us and each control. You dont have to view each others conversations, but you can if you want. I generally let her handle conversations since she made a bard, and I made a meathead.
Dunno about controller- neither of us use one.
The only caveat with co-op is that you cannot remove player-created characters from the party, AND all joining players must create a character. As such, I would recommend having the mindset of not allowing players to join a campaign if they are not going to be reliably present. Instead, consider creating a new campaign to play with them. This is not really communicated anywhere, and has caused some complaints in the community.
It has split screen with two controllers. Not sure you will be able to LAN with one copy.
