I did this with a level 4 party or
Wyll, Karlach, Shadowheart (respecced to Life Cleric) and my Hunter Ranger.
It was a challenge, but using the environment and crowd control helps.

Wyll Hexing the Wisdom of the boss gnoll, and Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Enfeebling Scrolls, Hold Person etc, whilst I dealt with the rest of the things

I also ended up there probably way too soon, i explored the entire northwest before i even made it to the goblin camp.

It can be done at level 3 (i lost 3 of my party members with just karlach surviving) but it's possible. Indeed a tricky fight due to the amount of enemies (and the fact that the boss hits HARD).

You can cheese the fight by using smart positioning, pre-buff certain characters before "throwing them into the fight/enemy sight range" and using the hills outside the cave for hight advantage.

You can also save scum every round if fighting if for example a high powered spell attack or the like misses an enemy.

I summoned the ogres, but I think it's doable at lvl 4, it didn't seem like I needed them much there, definitely made it easier though

If you go iinto the blighted village and walk to the back on the road that leads you to the Goblin Camp there's a building with three ogres eating a tie fling. You can convince them to work for you through skill checks. Try and convince them to work for you for food. They give you an item that you can use to summon them to a fight.

If you talk to leader before combat, you can use the tadpole to gain an advantage.

Is that the fight at the cave near where you get Karlach and fight the (fake) paladin that was after her? I did it at level 4 (which I got by killing the aforementioned ogres - as well as every gobbo in the town and the two uglies in the barn).

I came from the other end of the cave, used the two NPCs there as cannon fodder and Karlach as a tank, while I bombarded them with spells and arrows. Putting two Clouds of Daggers at the entrance was pretty effective against all the fodder, although I still had my first character downed (Shadowheart got hit by every acid of fire flasks they threw at me) and both NPCs died.

I did this in EA and can confirm it works. I also got what you got when I had to reload, I assume it is a bug. I was able to get it to play through how it's supposed to and it makes the fight much easier.

enrage spell (forget what its called, they attack whatever's nearest to them) on the leader works great here. a bunch of the gnolls started attacking the leader and viceversa, which let me pick them off without taking damage. Once the adds were down, landed a lucky hold person on the leader and killed it next turn

That is the best way to do that fight. Save before you get to them. Convince the Gnoll leader to attack the other gnolls. When the gnolls are down to 1 or 2 left, start attacking the leader.

So you've got two ways to do this: The easy way and the hard way

The easy wayt: Illithid skills. The leader will approach you on their first turn and in that conversation you get a lot of options to sabotage the fight.

the hard way is straight up combat. This is what I did, and I managed twice by heading up the hill, stealthily assasinating the first gnoll up there, and raining death on the rest. By the time they got up there were 3 of them left, and though it was tough, I managed to clear them out.
