Joining mid play through

is there a way my friend can join my game thats already in progress and just be gale?

Yes. You load games into singleplayer anyway and then invite friends and assign them characters.

yes i see that but they are forced to make a custom character

how do i assign characters

go to session in the menu (press escape) once in your multiplayer game and you can assign characters to each player (similar to DOS if you played those)

tried tihs didnt work

I tried this as well. Friends started a game, I try to join. I get to character creation screen. They try assigning Astarion to me but the game wouldn't allow them.
