Flanking?
So. I have completely surrounded a unit with 4 people all in melee, and attacking. None of them seemed to get any bonus at all to their attacks, there's no advantage, their attacks rate doesn't seem to go up either.

Is flanking not in this game? It feels really weird that in a turn based strategy game, they'd not add in the thing that makes melee combatants kinda functional? (Especially with how low everyone's die rolls are)

Flanking doesn't really exist, no. The mechanic that someone is "threatened" gives certain specific bonuses to some abilities and classes, such as letting rogues use sneak attack.

It's not in the game bc it isn't a thing in 5e D&D.
Then again there are other things in this game that make this combat more than functional for melee combat. The combat opens up the further you progress. At lv 5 melee classes get a second attack per turn for example.

Yep, no flanking. Just one of those weird decisions that doesn't make a lot of sense. Unless it's not standard in the latest DnD edition or something, but even then I'd call bs on that since it makes no logical sense.

tbf flanking is not official ruling in 5e - its an optional rule

There is not a penalty or being surrounded by enemies. Just one enemy in melee gives you the threatened tag. This features are not implemmented in the game, but....you can have a heterochromic character, sobe happy

I've never seen anyone choose to not use flanking before in their game. That's absolutely silly. Tactics is how your suppose to overcome bad dice rolls.

Yeah.. Not in 5e. It was in in previious D&D editions, but they did streamline D&D alot for 5e. Good changes for tabletop! In computer games they could use more complex rules… but this is 5e variant.
The only real reason to flank is to get a stealth attack on rouge, if 1 other person is near you should be able to take a stealth attack.

Then maybe you should play those games. D&D ruleset maybe is not for you, Baldurs Gate games were always set on these rules and flanking was not in BG1, BG2, and BG3.

You could create mod for that, otherwise you shall play another games where is this essential (according to your words) option.

Can't you get extra attacks by knocking them prone?
hannibal_pjv Aug 5, 2023 @ 1:33am
You get advantage agains prone enemies.
Nyaria Aug 5, 2023 @ 2:19am
Flanking IS part of D&D 5e.

I've never seen anyone run a 5e campaign without flanking being in the game.

Those saying it's not a 5e feature is wrong.

It's an optional feature, yes. But it is a 5e feature. It SHOULD be in the game. Or at the very least be an "Optional" rule.
hannibal_pjv Aug 5, 2023 @ 2:25am
Well… I play in two tabletop 5e campaigns with different GMs and neither is using flanking. So it depends on what DM prefers. It seems that mine prefer npt to use optional game play rules, but allow ooptional character creation rules to keep the game play simple.
