Tadpole use consequences?

just want to know if there are any consequences for using illithid powers and unlocking that tree in the end game? I don't want to be stuck in an ending I can't do anything about because I wanted to take advantage of a game mechanic...

Judging by achievements (there is one called Ceremorphosis) and game's narrative (narrator saying that part of you is lost forever each time you are using these powers) yes, there are consequences.

This exactly, I don't really care that much about spoilers, I'm at a point in the game where I could use it or not use it. All I'm asking for is whether it will lock me into a crappy ending if I do use them?

Life has too much mystery for my liking as is. I like to make informed choices when I play video games. I enjoy the freedom to plan out my character's life and consequences since I can't do so with my own chaotic life in the real world.

Besides, this game is too darn long for me to go 30hrs in just to find out I screwed myself into a crappy ending.
