Stupid question but: you watched a video about how others did it and these steps (like inserting the gem etc.) did not work for you?
Because from what you wrote I read it like: you used misty steps and then the elevator didn't work. That is as it should be. The elevator is out of reach for everyone at the beginning.
But in case you inserted the Umbral Gems into the socket and couldn't call the elevator using the gem on the ground next to the chasm... then yeah. Sounds rough. Though the Devs said they are working on the issue.
This worked for me as well. The buttons on the elevator thingy became clickable after this.
What did it for me was to go into turn-based mode, skip every character's turn and let the environmental turn unfold. The elevator then started to move downwards.
YOU SAVED ME! Finally! That was the fix I needed!
Tiny thing, but often overlooked. It's what did the trick for me after restarting and save scumming twice.
I had exact same issue, and somewhere along the line (after 100 saves and reloads) I ended up with all four gems back in my inventory even though I could see the two I placed in the altar in front of the door. I restarted computer and used mouse and keyboard to look from reverse camera angle so I was looking at Shadowheart behind the alter where the elevator was at first. I clicked on the empty socket in alter got prompt to insert, but wouldn't show my items. I called up inventory dragged that window out of the way and dragged gem into insert item window, and elevator re appeared (Camera facing away from it) in the original spot and I got the dialog (again) where Shadowheart feels a presence.
