Miss, miss, miss!
Why can't my characters hit anything? What decides miss chances anyways? How my character always at 35% hit chance and only being 1 level lower than an enemy. I miss 2 out of 3 attacks. How do you all like these types of games.

This is my first turn base combat game and will probably be my last.

Are you using a weapon you aren't proficient in?

You should try Xcom/2, there you get a 90%+ to hit things... How could you possibly miss.

If you are at 35% you are doing something wrong. Using a weapon you aren't skilled in, using armor you aren't skilled in, fighting in the dark without darkvision, etc.

Check the combat log, which I'm pretty sure is in the bottom right corner. If you hover over various actions it'll tell you what dice roll lead to the result you got. If you can't make sense of the info there, you can probably find some good info on a wiki or in YT videos that explains how the combat system actually works.

Didn't even know that existed

For ranged: High ground and distance from the target affect your hit chance.
For melee: Flanking the sides, but especially getting behind your target help your hit chance.
Weapon proficiency and Sneaking help for both.
Shift + C for group sneak.
G to split your group and move the characters independently.
It's great for setting up ambushes.
I love games like this because they punish every mistake so brutally. I die a lot and have to reload saves A LOT.

This is great info! thank you!
Also know, you remember the misses more than the hits.
I encourage you to record your rolls and it'll even out.

Our brains just like to focus on what causes us 'discomfort' and in this regard it's missing. We don't care if we hit unless it's a crit, and then we're like "nice."

It does feel like something is "amiss" :) with the games random number generation when it comes to combat.

I was actually on the OTHER side of the fence with this a few days ago, and I argued that it's random, you're just having bad luck.... So I went and did some testing. Since the game launched I've been keeping track of hits and misses for each type of attack, and putting them in a bucket list for what % that the game tells me I should be hitting/missing.

50-60% chance to hit bucket:
Melee - 45% with 128 attempts
Ranged Physical - 28% with 143 attempts
Spell Attacks - 30% with 100 attempts
Save spell "like Sacred Flame" - 11% with 113 attempts

So something really does seem wrong with the RNG at the 50%"ish" mark. Melee attacks are close enough with the limited data set I have so far, but ranged, and especially "to save" spells are way way off. Past the point of just bad luck.

Another subset that I'm tracking is 75% to 90% chance to hit. Here is what that bucket looks like. It's a much smaller data pool, but it's still interesting.

Melee - 85% with 30 attempts
Ranged Physical - 65% with 38 attempts
Spell attacks - 60% with 32 attempts
Spell save attacks "like sacred flame" - 40% with 34 attempts

Again, I know that this data set is way lower, so a much larger margin of error, however those numbers also line up with the numbers from the 50-55% bucket. It really seems like the numbers are just not being generated right for ranged attacks and especially for On save attacks.

Might have something to do with karmic dice in the settings.

I would hope that if one was willing to record the data for all of these, that they would turn off karmic dice lol.

And yes.... it's off lol.

RNG just sucks sometimes. I actually lost the first fight of the game, against the 3 imps, because despite the impossible odds of this happening, I missed literally every attack I made, until they finally killed me. You just learn to suck it up and try again.

Sounds like so much fun when a turn based combat system has worse accuracy than Shaq at the free throw line.
