to dualwield melee you need to equip both weapons in the 2 left slots.
there's also a toggle on the left side of the action bar to turn on and off dual attacking so you can opt to just attack with main hand without needing to unequipped your 2nd melee weapon
also not all "1handers" can be dualwielded they need to have the "light" tag on them some are too heavy to dual wield despite being 1handers.
dualeiwld "light" weapons are typically daggers, hatchets, shortswords ect
Dunno. And yes I immediately saw the distinction between melee slots on the left and ranged slots on the right side of the character sheet.

Dagger

see the tags at the bottom of the weapon. "Light" is needed to dualwield. Rapier is too heavy to dualwield
hatchets, daggers, short swords ect.
Thanks for pointing that out.
its all in the details!
hmm i think im thinking of a different skill
"When you are wielding a melee weapon that is not Two-Handed or Versatile in one hand, and no weapon in the other, you deal an additional 2 damage with that weapon."
very specific wording "and no weapon in the other" shields aren't weapons :)
