That's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Yes, once you've played the game and know exactly what is going to happen and what you can do to make the fight easier, then you can set it up in a way that makes it doable, if you get good initiative.
But only then. If you play it blindly for the first time, this is just a nightmare. You are suddenly surounded by dwarfs with thunder arrows in a room full of lava pits and chasms. If you roll bad initiative, one of your characters can be dead or catapulted into the lava pit before you even have your first turn. This is so outrageously difficult that you can only make it through with extreme luck, extreme save scumming or if you know exactly how the fight is going to play out. Most likely a combination of all three.
This just isn't good game design. It's frustrating for anybody except for the ultra fans who learn everything by heart and then walk through an adventure they already know every nook and cranny of, pretending they would have been able to do so on their first playthrough.
I had a problem with this as well, I literally went to the beginning of the area and killed every single dwarf leading to that area, and then dealt with the dwarves before I blew the blockage. It's still rough, but without Nere there it helps quite a bit. By himself hes ezpz
Also, I found out the hard way theres no way to prevent the gnome lady from being killed, if you attack him before the scene plays out she just ends up dead anyway.

Loot the dead bodies from the edge of the lava.

The Duergar you need to talk to for the betrayal option is named Brithvar and IIRC he's south of the rockslide/Nere, right by the stairs. You just need to convince him you're not actually a true soul, which requires a couple pretty easy dialogue tests. If you flip him, all the Duergar other than like three will side with you during the fight, making it an absolute cakewalk.
If you don't want to do that, you can just yeet Nere into the lava when he runs out, which will kill him outright in a couple turns. You can do the same thing to the sniper up on the balcony and to a few of the other Duergar who are poorly positioned near the edge of the lava. If you don't have a high strength character or a warlock, you probably have a couple of thunder arrows in your inventory which can do the job just as well. The ogre horn should work too, but the layout of that part of the forge can make them spawn in weird places so that they take awhile to get to you.
