the ♥♥♥♥ are you on about
unfortunately the game doesnt really open up for you until level 5 when half your party gets fireball. at which point every fight will become pretty trivial until you hit act 2 and find out they all have hunger of hadar (the darkness one, seriously, every character should be multiclassed into warlock just to get devils sight cuz this game is ridiculous)
i havnt done this fight since EA and when I did I sided with Nere and it wasnt all that bad. i mean, it was still pretty bad, especially because they call allies to come help.
The reality is if you dont have fireball you're going to have a bad time.
In this game you need to have either extremely high damage, or extremely high durability. Preferably both. My character is a plate armored shield wielding sorcerer with an AC of 24 and gear that boosts me further when im concentrating on a spell or casting in melee combat. Shadowheart has an item that whenever she casts mass healing word everyone not only gets healed but also gains Bless. no one else in the party really matters as together we can heal and obliterate pretty much anyone. But for higher damage I bring Gales fireballs and for higher survivability I bring Karlach with the Tough feat, shes got over 100 hp rn.
I dont know how much of that you can get by the time you reach Grymforge, im guessing not much of it. Still, you need to armor up all your characters as much as possible, especially the casters. I found the moderately armored feat is very good for Gale at level 4, gives him an AC of 18 or so. If everyone in your party is at AC 18 or higher, enemies wont be able to kill you as often, which means you need to cast healing spells less often.
I also have finished Act 2 and I can say that I hoarded all of my items like poisons and potions and for no reason. So, if you are struggling with a fight, go ahead and use some of your stash of consumables. dont be afraid to give out healing potions like candy because you'll find plenty of them, especially if you buy healing potions from every vendor before inevitably being forced to kill them. dont forget to buy from auntie ethal before you cant anymore.
sorry i dont have any specific pointers for this fight. i found it hard but i didnt find it that difficult. get high AC, bring healing word preferably on two characters because its a bonus action to bring a 0 hp party member back to life.
But honestly. my best advice for this fight, is to be level 5. thats when the game really opens up and a lot of fights become winnable.
There's two parties that are strong here. But you're not forced to fight both simultaneously. Heck, I didn't even announce the fight; I just kicked the captain into magma and let that be the start of the fight.
Once combat is over and you've set up positions for Nere you can watch a cutscene where you're powerless to watch him kick a gnome into lava and then destroy him because it's a 1v4 and this game really isn't too good at handling those.
If it helps, have a ranged class (magic or martial) hide on the overhanging catwalk. I get Gale up there with Misty Step but you could feasibly get around there from the other grymforge warp point, provided you've taken out the enemies there. You can pepper them and move back before they even get a shot at you.
You have several options here.
1) If you take too long, he will be dead ready for looting.
2) If you break down the blockade and run away from the conversation, you can reposition and start up top with the guard, and snipe down on everybody, throw down bombs etc.
3) You can start clearing them from a more ideal position before you even break down the blockade.
4) More options that I don't know about I'm sure.
It's not buggy. There are two factions, and both have reasons for leaving depending on the outcome.
Or if you wanna be a gangster you can steal the special $1200 explosive powder barrel from the gnome and use that to open the passageway. It will kill like half the people in the room and they won't even be mad about it.
I did both.
