You or your companions have to do the killing blow indeed.
Open her spellbook (there's probably a shortcut, otherwise open her inventory, at the top of the window are three buttons, iirc the spellbook is the one in the middle)
Y'oull see two spell rows, one for her "prepared" spells and one just below with all the ones she knows. Click on one of the prepared spells to remove it, then click on Command in her known spells to prepare it.
Pray the Cambion doesn't make his save against the spell.
Since people are don't seem to know about the Everburn Blade[/b], here's a quote from the Wiki [baldursgate3.wiki.fextralife.com]:
"EVERBURN BLADE NOTES & TIPS
Proficiency: Greatsword Proficiency or Martial Weapon Proficiency.
Rarity: Uncommon
Value: 240 GP.
Weight: 2.7
ID: 660483f6-8eb3-45be-88a4-327f9d417026
You can pick up this weapon with any character, they will still have it in their inventory after the Nautiloid crash
You can cast Command "drop" to force Zhalk drop this weapon.
You cannot sheathe this weapon
ever burning icon baldurs gate3 guide 64pxEver-Burning: An arcane flame that cannot be quenched."
step one collect 2 chests that are scattered arround the nautaloid(there are 1 in each of the 1st two rooms) and place the chests blocking the passage that the reinforcements come through
step two give shadow heart command drop, and steal the weapon (giving it to laezel)
using these two steps then spaming damage through cantrips and mele hits hasnt failed for me yet
There's various things you can do that will greatly improve your odds of success:
1) Free Us, they are a big help for all the lvl 1 fights.
2) Pick up one of the chests you find before, and drop it behind you in the small corridor right before triggering the Zhalk fight. It should be perpendicular to the corridor in order to act as a barricade for the cambions popping up later during the fight. If the cambions still go through, you haven't set up the chest right. There's at least two chests available, you can use both if it makes it easier, but one is enough once you get a feel of how to do it right.
3) Free Shadowheart and have her memorize the Command spell. Use it with the "Drop" version to make Zhalk drop his sword on the ground. Your odds of success are around 55% or so (maybe more on lower difficulties than Tactician, I don't know) and you have two spells, ie two attempts. The odds are good, but if both attempts fail, it's probably over, since Zhalk will kill the mind flayer way too quickly if he keeps his sword, so feel free to reload.
4) Pick up the sword dropped by Zhalk with Lae'Zel, so that even if you can't kill him, you still get to keep his weapon.
5) Shadowheart's damage is pitiful at lvl 1 without respec, so I tend to keep her in the area between Zhalk and the Nautiloid commands, so that she can run and end the encounter at will if things go south. Also, be careful, the mind flayer becomes hostile as soon as Zhalk is dead.
What I consider MANDATORY to obtain the Everburn Blade:
1) Free Shadowheart: from her spell book, remove basically any spells prepared and add at least “Command”.
2) Pick up during your adventure as many “Nautiloid tanks” as possible. You should have found 1 for sure and 2 more in the room with Zhalk. They are high explosives barrels you can place around Zhalk for a grand finale if you don’t manage to kill him fast enough (beware of the blast area)
3) As soon as combat begin, cast command -> Drop on Zhalk (reload if it fails) and use your nearest character to rush Zhalk and pick up the sword (I usually make Lae’Zel equips it right away).
Congratulation, you’ve obtained the sword. You can stay and fight or flee (you just lose some xp, and no loot worth a damn)
What I consider a “Nice to have” to obtain the Everburn Blade (especially at higher difficulties) AND kill Zhalk at the same time.
1) Pick up any large chests you find around the nautiloid: you should have 3 of them before the fight with Zhalk. Use them to BLOCK the corridor leading to the arena, so that no reinforcement can reach you.
2) Tame “Us” and use it to help you deal damage to Zhalk (it isn’t really needed even on tactician)
3) Use Shadowheart (after using command) to cure and sustain the mindflayer: it’s the only opponent of zhalk who is capable of dealing damage. Even Lae’Zel struggles at this point.
4) As soon as Zhalk has less than 40/50 HP, deploy the nautiloid tanks, clear the blast zone and detonate them all, killing Zhalk and the mindflayer in a single satisfying explosion.
5) Flee the Nautiloid.
I've used DualSense since Launch. (Controller wasn't available in early EA and was barely useable in later EA.)
WASD + Mouse gameplay hurts my hands in less than an hour. BG3 is a game I found best played in long sessions. Controllers don't give me issues after playing for hours.
Controllers will take learning to navigate the UI to select stuff more than moving a cursor around for that.
