i found a solution buried in a reddit thread but it works

I GOT A FIX. your save file technically still exists within larians save games however for some reason steam isnt registering it. so instead of starting over go into ur computer settings and type larian studios to find whever larian savegames saved itself on ur computer. then click baldurs gate 3 then player profiles. if its anything like mine the bugged save folder will be called "debug_clinte=1 or 2 or 3"

all u have to do is go into that folder find ur last autosave/manuel save drag that folder to ur desktop make a new profileor use an old one and drag it into that folder.

launch the game and u should now be able to continue.

just did it myself and it worked. you might need to do this on every start up or it may just fix it permentantly idk but its much better then restarting from however long you played yesterday
