Thats what made DnD, DN FING D! You wouldn't make it through any of the original IE games, scrub.
1. If you are unable to survive without +2 in main stat that is on your minmaxing attitude.
2. Optimal choices still exist. Darkvision, advantages on mental saving throws, lucky. There is no point for minmaxer to EVER take human. And for people doing RP because human is just bland and pointless.
Your point about optimal choices persisting is well taken. But the variation between optimum versus not is much smaller. Taking dark vision or lucky is helpful but wont make or break the build at the numbers level.
Amen. Only modders can fix this now or if they implement it in the game as an update.
At the numbers level lucky doesn't play role? As in "reroll one"? Advantages on INT,WIS,CHA saving throws doesn't play role? BUT +2 DOES? How good is your math?
To be fair to Larian, I believe WotC made them change the racial stats to be more like the most current version of DnD they are pushing out. EA had the OG racial stat system.
If the statline choices we've lost with this change are re-inserted, it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. But it's strictly better that they're not attached to species choice, one of your most meaningful roleplay decisions.
Take a breath my dude.
