Multiplayer: Joining Mid Game Forces Character Creation

My friends and I are trying to join each others campaign temporarily in co-op. For example, one friend has a campaign going. I want to drop in and just take control of a companion character, play with them, and then leave and let them continue on their merry way.

But when we try to join their game, which is already started and they have companions, the game forces us to create a new character. The problem is when I/anyone leaves, the character we created is now stuck on their save and they're forced to keep them.

I know a lot of people have been asking to join mid game to create their own character, but we don't want to create a character. We can't even use the 'Session' button to hand them companions. The companions either get sent back to camp, or arrow to move characters around is greyed out.

We tried joining in multiple different ways: Putting companions into camp and having people join, having the host get all the companions we want to play and trying to join, joining from camp, joining from overworld, joining mid combat.

Nothing works to get us to just take control of companions. I'm super confused because I thought it would be way easier to join and take control of a companion.

Is there supposed to be a specific way to invite people and join, is this a bug, or intended feature? It doesn't seem very drop in/out friendly if that's the case.

My guess is your best bet is to just wait for Mods. From what I'm hearing, sounds like Devs intended this idiocy, and likely have no intent to "fix" it.

How did you do that???

Do you started the game as "multiplayer" or was it a single player campaign and you just joined?
