Companions are poop
I was hoping we would get at least 10 more companions now that the game is out of ea, but we barely hit the 10 companion mark ( excluding boiler plate characters(.
BG1 + BG2 had more than 20 companions, some of them were really cool characters and we had good classes to choose from ( both good and evil ), the ones we have now are ♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Afaik we cant create custom characters as companions either.

The female characters are either toxic, boring or ugly.
For male characters we lack a dedicated tank choice.

Currently in my chaotic good, dragon sorcerer playthrough im running with astarion + shadowheart, but theres no good ( skills and alignment ) fighter / paladin to choose from that could act as a tank.

I might try that, im just lacking a tank tbh the rest can be filled otherwise.

Dragon Sorc makes a great tank, so you should just do it yourself. Couple levels in and you barely have to spend any resources on being tanky and can just blast or whatever most of the time.

I feel like Larian wanted an "evil" campaign with the companions. As off the top of my head we only really have 1 "good" most seem to fall on the "evil" spectrum with a few "neutral" sprinkled in.

maybe the 2 "secret" ones will, especially considering who they are.
Really feel like Lae'zel and Asterion are only two really evil ones, seem shadowheart is more neutral or neutral good. She should you'd imagine be evil given she is a priestess of Shar, but it feels more like she is trying to fit in that actually wanting or wishing to be evil.

Shadowheart literally worships a evil god and is part of an evil cult.

I have three hirelings and my main character and am enjoying things. Having a bard acting as dedicated skill monkey/face is such a great QOL improvement.

100% agree on the Bard. Mine has been very useful so far, and the best part: she secretly has a penis.

That by definition, in order to get into, you have to commit murder or worse to a family member. In no universe is she neutral. She worships a god who's whole shtick is lies, manipulation, murder, chaos, and nihilism (she literally wants to burn the universe down).

The story hints that shes been brain washed to be in it.. At least in early access. We never found out because the game ends but BG3 hints that there is more to Shadowheart than we see at face value.

I wouldn't even say hints, more like screams. SH is supposed to be evil on paper but gets all puppy sad eyes when you kill a bunch of tieflings she couldn't care less about. Oof, such an evil companion.

Exactly.. i didn't want to spoiler too much.

The problem with that is that there is ZERO precedent for that being a thing in D&D. It's either a) a bunch of people buying into her manipulating them (Cleric of Shar ffs), or b) Larian pulling something out of their butts because it sounds good that isn't actually a thing in the D&D setting.

I cannot spell this out more clearly. SHE IS A CLERIC OF THE GODDESS OF LIES AND MURDER! she only cares what you do with the tiefling kids because she has Urchin as a background

I don't want to spoil too much but BG3 is heavily on the homebrew.. like wasted and fallen down heavy.
Yeah, it's a huge bummer. And it's not like that they could have introduced more companions in the later acts. Heck, even companions/mercenaries with maybe like 500 lines of dialogue and some sort of reactivity would have been fine for me. Just give us more group options.

...who doesn't act like a cleric of the goddess of lies and murder. And has magic reaction to Selûne statue. And conveniently has her memory wiped/locked. Do I need to go on?
The lack of gnomes, dawves and halflings is poor design.

The more I see games with "rich story companions", the more I think it's actually a mistake and it's hurting the adventuring. BG2 had it good, there were a lot of companions, they had their moments but weren't that much entangled in the story as to make writer have to limit the number to a bare minimum.

The companion builds are also an issue.
There is only one companion thief ? Considering it's D&D5E and what you do is pretty much decided at lv 1, not having at least 2 character possible for each role is a mistake.
Having shadowheart act as another thief was good, changing her background was definitely a mistake.
