Gale and Astarion are worthless
Anyone else just murder Gale as soon as you see him? I know I do. I don’t care about the repercussions. He’s a terribly written character. Astarion has mildly more value since I can sell him for money. But like delicious tender veal I refuse to level him up past lvl 1 so he cannot put up much of a fight. I don’t care about his “tragic” past. Vampires make terrible companions.

ahh yes the gay vampire who steals my blood every night is super useful.

and the wizard who consumes my magical artifacts because he "hungies" and if he doesn't eat them he blows up the whole world.

no need for any of this garbage in my party.

Astarion has never stolen my blood at all. Maybe you should say no sometimes lol.

Gale consumes magic items. Ya three whole items. Wow, big loss there lol.

Gale is a selfish bastard who acts nice to you as a way to manipulate you in order to make you do things according to his will. On the surface Astarion seems to be more of a threat because he'd kill you in your sleep but I think that Gale would say or do anything if he believed that it would benefit him. So which one is really worse or worth less to us in our party than some other companions?

Karlach is the only one that I feel has my back.
Gale actually is a good guy. and Astarion is really good at unlocking things and stealth which is needed later in game. Any character can be good if you steer them to good just like they can be steered towards bad stuff too in some cases.
but I can just use the rogue hireling and not deal with Astarions foppishness and vampirism.

I shouldn't have to constantly keep one eye open when I sleep. You get caught trying to steal my blood, even once, you die or get sold off to the highest vampire hunter bidder.

and three items too many imo. should be zero because the story line is really dumb. He gets to stay trapped in the void and can go explode there for all I care. Sir Fuzzalump is way cooler imo. Aaaand Sir Fuzzalump is one of the few companions that aren't the age of 18-23 years old. He actually looks like a wizard.

I'll need to look into Astarion as as assassin since I have been using him more as an archer (I'm only in Act one, L4).

On the discussion of character stories and the depth of interactions (verbally) I'm of the view that Larian really dropped the ball on the hiring of the writer or were pressured into some sort of woke agenda with archetypes.

1. The romance lacks depth and is way over the top in terms of the persistent lead ins to it or dominating the discussion options.
Surely we can have #metoo for the player characters and not have party members trying to bukkake you every time you talk to them? At least buy me dinner or something...

2. Did Larian hire some woke douchebag from ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to design this game where the female characters are basically the boss ♥♥♥♥♥/masculine and the men are generally soy-boys?

I'm surprised there isn't a trans quadriplegic gnome with a magic dong trying to peg you every time you speak (who would turn out to be your step-sister/brother).

There is an element of the effeminate, and somewhat sophistication relevant to medi-evil times in each of the male characters - Astarion and Wyll for example have this presentation of old school nobility...yet men of that era were still often hard as nails (Think Noble ships captain boarding pirates vessels at sea also at Court in makeup and a wig).

IMO Larian didn't get the balance right though because they paid no attention to women of that era and simply reversed male /female behaviours (I won't say gender because the word is meaningless in this context today).

Karlach is the one shining light (lol) here being very much like soldiers of the time and her non-human character makes this more believable. She adds colour to otherwise boring dialogue by <insert resting ♥♥♥♥♥ face>.

3. The way male/female archetypes present, and the overt efforts to ♥♥♥♥ you while ignoring "no" create the distasteful combination leading a solid portion of male players (who dislike the idea of taking ♥♥♥♥) to say it's "too much".

I agree with them, if only in terms of the lack of taste in frequency and persistence. More complex dialogue and relationship would be an RPG event yet instead we have "hook-up culture".

Is this a kind of virtue signalling or pandering by Larian - you know.... like Disney and others are doing? Seemingly, we are obliged to accept stories that ram sexuality or progressive ideals down the proverbial throat, and Minorities deserve "equality of outcome" in all stories.

Every complaint I have seen on reddit or YT or elsewhere about the writing that raises some of this immediately results in a pile on of abuse. "bigot" "homophobe" or screaming that they need to accept it and piss off.

If you took out the current attempt at romance - not much story would be left of any interest with the party members and that's the real failure.

The game can give you more than a few companions set at level 1. It has to be the player (in this case, YOU) who makes them "worthless". No one else to blame. If you don't like them, just remove them from the game. It's so simple.

A vampire makes an EXTREMELY powerful companion. However, he's worthless if you make him so. My Dark Urge used to use him as a bait during many hours of gameplay. Even as a bait, meant to tease and seduce enemies for me to slaughter, he has never actually died in combat. A most lucky bastard.

Gale is the one who saved my Dark Urge from a disastrous event, allowing me to continue with my permadeath record (permadeath: delete/abandon your character if you have a "game over" event in the game). Thanks to Gale's love and other companions' support, I have not died on Tactician difficulty yet, even after 500+ hours spent in exploration and combat on Tactician.

Worthless or not, it's all up to you the player. Both the praise and the blame are on you.

I've never had Gale need to eat more than 2 artifacts in any playthrough because the orb is stabilized by Elminster in the mountain pass.

Even then, I usually give Gale one item then toss him back into the camp until Elminster fixes him before using him again. You really are flush with magical items in act 1 and plenty off them I have no use for.

I think it is based on item number and approval. I seem to recall to need to feed him three items.

No need to necro an old thread to spout unhealthy opinions on the Male characters of BG3. You could make your own to do that, try the Offtopic section instead. Stuff like that stays up there for people to 'engage' with if thats what you want.

As for everyone else responding, you'd be better starting your own thread or talk in current threads. This one is just one of the many casualties of necro-threads by a very tiny portion of gamers very very very angry at the world for all-the-things and wants to take it out on BG3 discussion forums on Steam. Farming points.. etc.

and for everyone whining about Gale: THREE ITEMS. ITS JUST THREE CRAPPY ITEMS! ANY CRAPPY ENCHANTED MAGICAL THINGS YOU FIND, ONLY THREE! My god, he won't eat your entire stash people! :) Said IN JEST AND FUN! But seriously, its 3 and you'll live.

Keep it healthy and Happy gaming!

Four month necros happen here all the time. Oops. Admonish. Happens again from someone else. Can't stop the constant politics. And can't stop the necros.

Well, I killed Astarion at the beginning and I even did not notice Gale, so I missed him...

No. Astarion is the greatest.
I refuse to recruit gale so I don't have to deal with his bomb.

just as an update: if you do kill gale and you don't revive him then your game ends. its hilarious how insane whoever wrote this character actually is to do something like that. its incredibly cringe. so i recommend you just do as you did and ignore him and leave him trapped in whatever hell hole he spawned from. ♥♥♥♥ gale.

Astarion is a brutal damage dealer and thief. I don't care much for his dialog, though.

Gale is perfectly fine as a pure wizard. His artifact consumption is inconsequential, as you will find plenty of crap to give him, and after consuming a few, he no longer needs to.
