I also have same problem. It happens on level up. To me, portrait are actually jumbled up, not completely black. D11.

Shadowheart turned black when she leveled up early in the game. I booted her from my group and when I added her back later it was fixed

The only solution I found now — to save b4 lvl up.
And reload if userpic turn black.

All companions will do this, not just Wyll. Wait for level up or go to the skelli guy in the camp and re-level.

You don't see color, I'd say that's socially good for you.

Yeah it seems to happen on saves. Someone said to turning shadows to high might fix it.

It is a bug - had it first with Astarion, but now with a ... spoiler character. It's linked to level-up - got it with both characters on level up. Astarion's left after his next level-up, so see if you ditch it once you ding.

solve in this way
start game with vulkan
respect the pg with black portrait and leave to level 1
do all level up not in the base camp but in any other place
save and restart game with dx11
