So how do perception checks work?
Is there any way to influence it beyond skills? I've played games where going into stealth mode improved perception and other surroundings checks. Is that true there?

perception works just like combat, a number is decided by the DM, which is the guy who made the game in this case, and then you roll a 20 sided and see if you roll higher than that number, plus or minus your wisdom bonus.
iirc it's
6-7 -2
8-9 -1
10-11 +0
12-13 +1
and so on, in both directions

Yes, but I've played RPGs where being in stealth gave a bonus to perception. Is that not a thing in BG3? Can't find any info on it.

as far as I can tell, nah. the only modifiers you get are those from character creation. You either pass your check, or ya don't.

I still failed perception checks in ea with absurd stats. Seems my ingame rolls are as terrible as my real life ones.

Hmm, so if at character creation we take a race that has perception AND a background that has it, do they stack for an extra bonus? Does that work for any skills? Seems like no, would break the need for expertise, right?

Also lighting effects perception checks, yes even if you have darkvision. If you think you might need to make a perception check throw on a torch or have someone cast light.

In standard 5e you would get a proficiency from two sources you would instead be allowed to select a different one instead. But BG3 just considers it a wasted point.

You can always roll 1

Baldur's Gate 3 follows the rules of DnD 5th edition.

Perception is just a flat stat that's boosted by your wisdom and whatever proficiency you might have to increase its roll chance. So every 2 points you have above 10 on your wisdom stat you gain +1 to perception rolls.
