Barbarians in helmets.
Wow, so Larian went with the super-duper strict version of Unarmoured Defence, then? Just discovered that wearing a helmet on my Barbarian counts as 'armour' even though it gives no AC bonus. (There was great confusing when I tried to cast Mage Armour on her!) I assume that's also going to apply to boots and gloves which require light or higher armour proficiency to wear, which is a heck of a lot of them IIRC from EA.

Seems a shame given that the whole point of the class is to lean into the Frazetta-style barbarian warrior, and those guys and girls almost always have a big horned helmet on (think Death Dealer, for example).

I suppose it might get modded?

I think Death Dealer might be more like an anti-paladin or blackguard in D&D terms... D&D barb is more like Conan or Beastmaster

but yeah, mod that nonsense right out

does that mean if my babarian has a helmet boots and gloves it doesnt get this "natural armor" that babarians can have if they run around naked?

Barbarians can wear helmets, boots and gloves so long as they aren't classified as medium or heavy armor. It should say in the descriptions of the helmets, or you just try them on and see which ones remove the AC bonus.

That said, giving a barbarian heavy armor is pretty effective if you want to go that route.

If you look at the gear description it will tell you the type of armor it counts as. Some headwear counts as armor, some does not.

Unarmored defense isn't even worth it past act 1.
If anything it's more lax because they can rage with medium armor on.

Mage Armour does not do anything on barb though

I mean, it'll say "light", "medium", or "heavy" armor on it if it counts as armor. It's the weight/bulk of the equipment that interferes with the Unarmored Defense. There are plenty of headpieces that give stats but don't count as armor. You can tell which ones as they're the ones that don't say "armor" in the description. :p
