> Doesn't like DND combat.
one of your braincells fail to work?
This is not a dnd. It's close to dnd but it's really not.
its as close as a video game is ever going to get to DnD
and its combat is pretty much 1:1
I beat Commander Zhalk and did not get the achievement. I even looted that hectic sword off his dead corpse after I killed him.

Because right now cheeves are still really buggy, I didn't get it until my second playthrough so yeah it sucks
Yes you can. I've repeatedly managed to defeat commander Zhalk and get his very nice greatsword. The trick is that you have to defeat him indirectly via the mindflayer on your side.
This is the strategy I use.
1. Your characters attack the trash mobs (mephits etc.). Those are level 1 mobs.
2. Use Shadowheart to heal the mindflayer so he doesn't drop far below 50% health. She can also give the mindflayer bless to increase his hit chance on Commander Zhalk.
3. The mindflayer will constantly hit Commander Zhalk and weaken him, You let your melee toons hit him as well after the mindflayer has estrablished aggro.
4. You have 15 turns to win the fight and move to the helm to activate the teleporter. That should be sufficient to get him down.
5. Remember that the mindflayer becomes hostile once Commander Zhalk is down. After 10 turns or so the cambion reinforcements arrive to help Commander Zhalk. However, they need some turns to get to the battle area.
6. When Commander Zhalk is down you use your main character to loot his body and grab the greatsword and armor. Then you let Laezel use dash to sprint to the helm to activate the teleporter.
7. Make sure you don't get close to the helm too soon because that will spawn reinforcements. So you only have one turn to get to the helm after these reinforcements arrive.
8. Your characters have no chance surviving aggro from Commander Zhalk because he's level 8 and has 2 attacks per turn. So if the mindflayer loses aggro you better reload unless Commander Zhalk is almost down.
I've seen quite a few people who are commenting on BG3 stumble on this fight. They think they're supposed to fight the boss the normal way. Instead they get party wipe after party wipe. Maybe the game hints that you need to run to the helm are too subtle. However, my example above shows you can eat your cake and have it too.
The BG3 battles are quite challenging if you don't know DnD well. It's easy to gimp your build from the start and struggle afterwards. However, you can respec for just 100 gold. There are plenty of YouTube videos explaining the game mechanisms and suggesting good builds for every class.
The hardest part of BG3 3 is to learn how to position your characters to maximize damage output and minimize incoming damage. You might have to think several moves ahead and know when to buff, heal, move or just wait for the mobs to come to you. Getting access to Misty Step will help a lot because then you can jump directly to a nasty mob and attack him in the same turn. Typically ranged or spellcasting enemies doing a lot of damage against your team. The game AI is good at using positioning against the players. So you need to lerarn how to be better than the AI.
I've learnt that healing pots can turn a difficult battle into victory. So don't be afraid to use healing pots in a bonus action to stay above 50% health (unless the battle is almost over). These are rather cheap and can be crafted too.
No you can kill the Tiefling Commander and grab his sword, I did it on my second restart because after 20 hrs in my initial save, I realized that I knew so much more about how these types of games work now, and most likely missed a bunch of stuff, so that's what I did.
My second playthrough has been way easier and more rewarding than the first one was shaping up to be.
This is where mods come in. Take a look at nexusmods. There's a ton that will eliminate this problem.
Also you were never expected to stop and fight them. The story encourages you to run past them, kill the weaker mobs, and crash the ship. There's a reason they're 7-8 levels higher than you at that point in the game.
Follow the directions which is run to the console and click on it at the end of the room.
That fight is unfair. The demon and Illithid are both extremely dangerous for your level. They are not meant to be defeated by you.
