There is no error. cantrip only means the spell scales with levels and starts at level 0. Being unlimited use is only defined by the class.
I've literally never known this to be the case in D&D..
I think I screwed up also since I have 2 Mage hands (Normal Bard spell, and an invisible one from my racial bonus.. so that's fun
The bad thing about mage hand in the game, is they didn't add anything more from EA, so the main issue I have with it is for arcane trickster which historically uses mage hand to pickpocket, etc. with it, so mage hand not having the utility you expect, makes arcane trickster not playable IMO.
They changed some rules purposefully, but despite they say they played DnD 5e before, I am not sure if they really did.
Their choice of subclasses is weird for most classes (the bard has for cooler ones than twice the same, e.g.) and, well, innate cantrips is wrong.
A cantrip's a cantrip. No matter where it comes from, it is „a magic spell that can BE CAST AT WILL without using a spell slot“.
If you gain a cantrip from whichever source, you can cast it at will. If you can't, it's not a cantrip.
That's a rule so basic about the spellcasting feature, getting this wrong tells loads about your skill in the game.
You're right: You should be able to cast that at will. That's the one thing cantrips do for you. That must be changed.
