CD?! What? None of the spells have a cooldown. Use the Rest to long rest and get your spellslots back before fighting please.
A lot of people will restart this game. No shame in that. It's a common occurrence in games like these. Especially due to the amount of inexperienced players that this game attracted.
A lot of them are just here to kill time until Starfield releases, not because they want to 'git gud' at turn-based role-playing games. You will improve if you have patience and a desire to learn. You'll need to take your time, though.
Unfortunately, I've played them for thousands of hours, so I don't find them particularly challenging anymore. Some players have an unwanted degree in this crap.
You could pick a Fighter. Become a tank for survival purposes.
Or, since this story already has every class of companion written into it, aside from Bard, Monk and Sorcerer, why not pick one of those three. Sorcerers have an overpowered spell or two. Monks have tremendous speed.
Have a balanced party. Fighter, Rogue, Monk, Ranger.
Or Fighter, Rogue, _____, Sorcerer.
