I mean they are amazing games. and there are recurring places/characters, but it's definitely not needed.
That said, the gameplay is going to be different than BG3 because BG 1&2 are based off 2nd Edition D&D ruleset and not 5th Edition D&D like BG3.
BG 1&2 is real time with pause, while BG3 is turn based.
BG1&2's max party size is 6x, while BG3 is 4x

Downside is, the rules and engines of BG3 are different and you'll have to re-learn some things to be really proficient...
