You roll 3 six-sided dice, then take their sum. That means your value could be anywhere between 3 and 18, excluding any other modifiers or crits.

rolls 3 dice 6 each. So average is 9 damage (3 x (1/2)6)) plus the lowest roll.

It rolls three dice with 6 sides. Meaning that the least damage it can do is 3 and max is 18 with most of the time result being in between.

It means that you roll 3 d6 dies or in more simple terms: The game rolls 3 6 sided die to determine the damage of that weapon. The resulting damage is the added up total of each of the 3 die + and modifiers like strength or dexterity

If it comforts you: we all were at that point where we wondered what such means. :lis_alex:

I am happy to see a helpful and nice community in action.

Best answer.

You figure that out by doing average comparison of the die.

Let's take an easy example that is very common.

2d6 VS 1d12

With 2d6, you are rolling two. six-sided die with a potential for 1 at the lowest and 12 at the highest PER dice, resulting in 12 max and 2 min.

With 1d12, you have the potential for 1 at the lowest and 12 at the highest.

With the 2d6, on average you are more likely to get higher damage as you are rolling two die.

With the 1d12, you are less likely to do as much average damage as the 2d6, but you have a better chance of getting max damage as well as minimum damage.

D4 is just a dice. !d4 and 2d4 is just 1 d4 dice versus 2 d4 dice. A d4 dice is a dice with 4 sides.

Without any modifiers it is just common math. 3d6 = 3 to 18
2d4 = 2 to 8
3d8 = 3 to 24
1d8 = 1 to 8

The first number is how many dice the second is the size of the dice. So 3d6 is 3 6 sided dice.

So see what gives you the best damage and go with that.
Pax Aug 3, 2023 @ 3:27pm
As an example: 1d4 - you roll one 4-sided die, so 1-4 damage; 2d4, you roll two 4-sided dice, so 2-8 damage. The first number is how many dice and the second is how many sides to each die. That is base damage and does not take into account any modifiers or magic damage, which will be reflected in other numbers/descriptors.
So, 2d4 (2-8) does more damage than 1d4 (1-4) or, even 1d6 (1-6). 1d8 (1-8) will, on average, do less damage than 2d4, but more than 1d6.

you guys are awesome. thanks for this

d3 = 3 sided dice (has sides with a 1, 2 and 3)
d4 = 4 sided dice (has sides with a 1, 2, 3 and 4)
d6 = standard dice in most board games like Yatzee, etc = 6 sided dice (has a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)
d8 = 8 sided dice (will have a side with a number from 1-8 ((same as above ones)).)
d10 = 10 sided dice (same as above, but with 1-10)
d12 = 12 sided dice (same as above, but with 1-12)
d20 = the DnD dice (same as above, but with 1-20)
The d20 is the one you will see roll in skill & dialogue checks.

With weapon stats if it is just 1 dice then the higher the dx or dxx (x being the number) is usually the better option, however some will say "dx + x" which can effect it.
Treat weapon stats as :
if just one dice = 1 TO x amount of damage (ex: d4 or 1d4 is 1-4 pts of possible damage)
if more than one dice = 1 times the number of dice you will roll TO the highest numbered side of a dice times the number of dice you will roll (ex: 2d4 = 2 to 8 potential damage)

In the case where your chara can use two different weapons like:
you have a magical +1 dagger that rolls a 1d4 + 1 OR a regular shortsword with 1d6
The dagger can do 2 to 5 damage (because lowest roll possible is 1 +1 magical damage)
The shortsword can do 1 to 6 damage.

Based purely on numbers the plus 1 dagger is better in this case because you can't do less than 2, whereas the sword can do 1 at worst. Also sometimes in DnD campaigns you run into certain creatures that can only be harmed by magical weapons, but I don't know if we will run into those yet in this game (probably though)

Hope this helps and was clear.

so to put it simply the first number indicates the number of dice being used.
the letter "d" stands for dice.
and the last number stands for what type of dice is being used...

so...
2d4= two 4 sided dice
2d6= two 6 sided dice
2d10= two 10 sided dice
2d20= two 20 sided dice

it can also be viewed as:
2d4= 2 to 8 damage possible per attack and ect...

Simple for me: 3d6 =

3 dice with 6 eyes > enemy with 18 hitpoints = every dice show 6 eyes = enemy down; every dice show 5 eyes = enemy 3 hitpoints left - very basic.
