RX 7900 XTX crashes
just experienced a second driver crash. crashed 2 times already, at random points

EDIT: it was fixed for me after 2 or 3 hotfix,i'm not sure if the devs did their job, because I also disabled every amd feature like anti lag in adrenalin, so everyone who's still experiencing crashes might try it.

ALSO NVIDIA USERS PLEASE DON'T COMMENT HERE IT'S AMD RELATED SINCE THEY GOT ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DRIVERS. THANK YOU.

You don't know anything mate.

No issues running on 7900 XTX. There is more components in a PC then just the GPU that might influence a crash behaviour.

AMD drivers have been solid for years now, this isn't 2010 anymore.

I know quite a bit actually. =)
It was only recently that AMD drivers were getting WHQL certification, as before they would just pump them out without proper testing. The cycle of updates is also variable. For example, the 6000 series went a couple of months without updates because all their devs were trying to do damage control regarding a major issue that appeared with the 7900xt/xtx, the solution of which actually limited the performance. That's why it was more on par with a 4080 than a 4090.

On the software side, a rtx 3060 will out perform a 7900xtx in Blender Renders, and some software won't even work with AMD GPUs. Many Unreal Engine and Unity developers have complained as well, and were forced to switch to Nvidia as certain issues were not being addressed by AMD. Thankfully this is a much smaller segment of the market, so it won't impact gamers as much.

Point is, while the AMD cards are attractive in the specs department, there are some inherent issues with AMD's GPU department that leave a lot to be desired. I would have loved nothing more than to get a 7900xtx over the 4090, if the experiences between the two were on par. Sadly its just not the case.

That said, if the leaks are true, AMD isn't even going to compete in the high end range for the 8000 series cards. That means no 8800 or 8900 cards. That is not a good sign.

Blender? Seriously we're talking baout gaming here, not application, development and AI where Nvidia has the lead with it's CUDA core implementation.

I'm a gamer, AMD delivers on this front with cost competitive GPU's and stable drivers.
This is happening to me. I've used TWO different computers with the 7900xtx and its doing the same damn thing. Luckily when playing multiplayer I'm not the host or else I'd be even more pissed. On the newest drivers, on the newest patch. Tried both directx 11 and vulkan, both doing the exact same thing. Really frustrating because I love this game other than sometimes hard crashes that lock the entire computer up.

For those of you crashing, too, are you using discord at the same time ? Someone earlier in the comments said it could be hardware acceleration on Discord.

Love the Nvidia people still commenting here.

Anyway, I had two areas where the crashes were excessive:
Radeon X7900 XTX - with OBS running though. So that doesn't help stability at all.

Area around Grimforge and Baldur's Gate proper, where I wrapped up some side quests.

I get frequent crashes (DX11 device removed) with my 7900 XTX stock settings. I'm yet to experience a crash after setting max frequency to 2400 MHz in Adrenalin. Does that work for anyone else?

7900XTX, I had constant crashes in the Underdark
Lowered max clock to around 2.2GHz, 0 crashes since

doesnt helped. game is still crashing
I've posted a possible fix for AMD GPU/CPU combo users. Basically in Adrenalin Software turn OFF Smart Access Memory. In-game settings limit frame rate to 120 or below and in steam, go to Baldur's Gate 3 properties and add --skip-launcher line in Steam Launcher.

Same! Glad to finally read someone also having these crashes in a specific location. For me it's also in the Grymforge area. Never had problems in the wilderness area at the start of the game.
Radeon RX 7900 XTX, MB ASUS Z690 Hero, core i9-13900KF. Radeon driver 23.8.1 (latest). I read in Known Issues that DX11 is unstable in this game, so I chose vulkan. What can I say? ABSOLUTELY F***ING UPLAYABLE. Constant lags and crashes every ~ hour (depending on location). I removed this piece of s**t from my PC case and installed old good rtx 3090, now everything is fine (with the latest nVidia drivers) except occasional crash once a day but only when loading a savegame. Thanks for proving the point again AMD, you'll never see a cent from me ever again
Everyone go update your AMD Drivers right now, in the 23.8.2 release notes, it states:

Fixed Issues

Application crash or driver timeout may be observed while playing Baldur's Gate 3 with DirectX® 11 API set on certain systems with Radeon™ RX 7000 series GPUs.

I tried it, still got crashes in both DX11 and Vulkan, even at the character creation.

EDIT : Trying on Vulkan, fulscreen instead of borderless and FPS capped at 80. Seems to work for now. I will edit if it still crash.
EDIT 2 : Nvm, crashes again, but I tried what HappyDroplets told and did a DDU before installing the new drivers, works like a charm now, thanks!

You don't even own the game on that account

Anyway,

Personally experienced no hard crashes in BG3 on my 7900XTX so far, but I've been playing on Vulkan since I got the game. there are *heavy* performance drops in some areas like Moonrise towers but so far on my end everything seems to be fine. Running a MBA card with 23.8.1.

I soft-crashed around twice I think? I wasn't able to replicate it and it was on both a older driver and game version, and it seemed to be related to opening the inventory. Then again, this was a soft crash that caused a driver crash, but the game recovered just fine.

Generally keep in mind that 23.8.1 (the current AMD driver) specifically lists DirectX11 crashes as a known issue, so for the time being, it seems to be either D3D11 with risk of crashing, or Vulkan with degraded performance. At least until AMD pushes out a new driver with a fix.
Small note here, Driver 23.8.2 released today alongside Starfield claims to have fixed the DirectX11 issues on RX 7000.
Tested an hour and had no crashes on the new driver in dx11. Seems to be resolved now, couldnt play for more than 10 minutes without a crash before. For those who updated but still have issues, make sure to do a DDU before installing the new driver. I've read that fixed it for some.
I played for quite a bit today on DX11 at 144hz max settings. No crashing for me anymore, thanks for the driver fix AMD.
