I think it is due to story to justify if there is a betrayal or some major plot. Because there was a lot of errors with dialogues between Gityankis as Lazeal would not treat you special, and dialogue as a Shar cleric did feel weird as you looked clueless.
that's because Paladins don't get their powers from gods in 5th edition lore. It sounds weird I know as they are holy warriors, but paladins receive their powers from their Oath. The sanctity of the oath is what gives them power.
I find it very sad that I can't make a custom sharran cleric though as interactions and romance options with shadowheart could be interesting. Guess I have to try out Selunite cleric instead but I REALLY wanted to go on an entire crusade path as a sharran against KT and later VD (Initials of characters instead of names to avoid spoilers)
Interestingly enough, Clerics of Vlaakith supposedly gets their power from pure die hard zeal in their belief in their lich queen's divinity, which in truth is fake. So what might happen if they get a turnface from learning the truth?
Cleric of Vlaakith really makes no sense, but most stuff about Githanki in this game is made poorly, Githanki are shown as very centralized and single-entity nation yet entire game they only send a few squads of soldiers. It makes sense for a city-state to send small amount of elite troops, but not from a totalitarian empire that is far larger than the city of Baldurs Gate.
A totalitarian nation on brinks of civil war due to the story, should send their entire legions. but the story about Githanki is rushed and tbh, it could have been avoided / ignored since Githanki continues to be least popular race in BG3 and most DnD players hate them or ignore them as a whole.
At least with mind flayers, you can have multiple mind flayer nations and they ussually oppose each other due to not being part of the same hive mind, but githanki are supposed to be this 1 grand organized totalitarian empire and yet they barely send anything until the very end which is also largely ignored to cut scenes.
