So what exactly would be the best pick for a "spellsword" type of character?
Always want to make this in rpgs, but none of them ever do it right outside action games.

I have a question? Have you never played a video game before? Or DnD for that matter? Any self respecting gamer knows there is no "best class" except to Stat Mongers 😂

Swords Bard. Pact of the Blade Warlock/Paladin multiclass. Eldritch Knight. Take your pick.

Sadly, the Blade cantrips likely wont be in game.

eldritch knight fighter

Assuming we get all PHB subclasses, Pact of the Blade Warlock, Paladin(any, Smites are basically magically Supercharged attacks), Fighter(Eldritch Knight), and Cleric(War domain will probably be the most fitting, but realistically most Clerics get access to melee spells) will all fit as a Spellblade.

How satisfying they feel is going to come down to Class balance and spell lists, but Larian seems to be trying to make progression feel solid across the board for all classes.

5 levels in warlock and 7 in paladin, or something like that. Another one is paladin/sorc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lj5W30hUJ0c

Eldritch Knight Fighter will be your best bet imo.
Paladin/Sorcerer multiclass I hear is really good on the tabletop. Good defenses and a fair bit of magic too from what I hear.

No real "best" though.

So in other words, there is a best class...

I really don't mind my melee half of the spell sword be just normal attacks (as long as they hit like a truck), but I do want strong mid-range casting as well.

Some games make you specify.

Best is always fishy in a party setup. Is it from a solo perspective ? are we taking 3 chars buffing that character into account ? Are there other factors like magic items available ? Should we look at the enemy types ?

In a party based campaign, the "best class" is very subjective. Because it could be the "best" on paper, but not perform as well as another one that should be worse but has better synergy with a certain party composition choices in the campaign.

I think I want to do vengeance paladin and some subclass.

I personally like Spell Sword classes where the spells enhance the sword swinging. Anything with Paladin does really well at that, and Bard's aren't bad at it either.

Strangely, I find Eldritch Knights terrible at it, as their spells are all offensive. Doesn't complement their sword swinging, but does let them handle groups and some utility.

If you want full spellcaster progression and an extra weapon attack, your BG3 options are Valor Bard, Swords Bard, any Pact of the Blade Warlock, and Moon Druid if you don't mind needing to shift forms.

Devotion Paladin. They get a class feature that lets them add their Spellcasting modifier to their attack rolls. They also have some neat close range features and good spells.

Spore Druid is also a viable 'spellblade' as Druids get Shillelagh, a cantrip which let's them attack and deal damage using their spellcasting modifier when attacking with a club or quarterstaff. Spore Druid is because they get really good close range class features.

You can also go Eldritch Knight Fighter. They deal damage and attack w/ Strength or Dexterity, but they get spells to cast alongside that.

Other than that, wait for mods. There will certainly be a Hexblade Warlock class mod within 2 weeks which is the epiphany of 'spellblade'.

2 fighter/10 sorcerer
Action surge, haste , quicken spell would allow you to cast up to 4 spells each round.
Wear any armor, use any weapon as well.
