Larian Homebrewing Class Progression?
During Early Access, Larian has only kind of stuck with what 5e designed when it comes to classes and subclasses. Sometimes the changes that Larian did were better - especially in a video game setting! However this does change how people will design characters when we don't know what to expect when it comes to traditional class progression.

I will give you examples:

  • Paladins getting their subclasses at level 1 instead of level 3
  • Ranger companions and familiars getting their own action economy and the summoner doesn't need to spend their bonus action to command them
  • Totem Barbarian was renamed the Wild Heart Barbarian with slight changes to the Totems
  • Wild Surges in BG3 are different than 5e as seen in the Wild Magic Sorcerer - probably with Barbarian too
  • In early Early Access, Wizards could learn any spell from a spell scroll no matter the spell list but that got fixed in a later patch

I was talking to people about Monks earlier in a different discussion thread and they mentioned seeing 17th level abilities in a TikTok and that the Martial Arts die starting out for Monk was a 1d6 instead of a 1d4 (could have been a mistake of the regular damage die for the weapon was a 1d6... didn't ask as I was distracted by a level 17 ability).

So is Larian looking at some of these classes like Rogue for instance that get subclass abilities or features at levels 3, 9, 13, and 17 in regular 5e D&D and flipping the story and giving you more in BG3? I don't know. I am curious if anyone has seen anything else that I missed in my list.

I believe most of the homebrew was more to make certain classes be a bit more viable. For instance, ranger and monk were 2 of the worst classes to choose from on tabletop. they are getting some buffs to make them be more inline with the other classes in terms of viability.

As for the Wildheart Barbarian name change, i think it was more for flavor than anything actually homebrewed.

Some of the abilities were altered as well, because some just don't translate well to a vidya game

Rangers and Monks needed some love to make them more appealing.

It's lists all of the current known changes from Tabletop to BG3.
It's only really understandable if you know DnD really well but is has every single current piece of info that we've seen in Early Access / Recent Demo Videos

Well I am curious that once I get to max level if I respec into the various subclasses just to see what changes they have done because mind you, traditionally in D&D at max level 12 out of the 12 classes included in BG3...
  • 3/4 subclass features for Barbarian, Monk, Wizard
  • 2/3 subclass features for Bard
  • 3/4 subclass features + Domain Spells + Channel Divinity for Cleric
  • 3/4 subclass features + Circle Spells for Druid, Warlock (Patron Spells)
  • 3/5 subclass features for Fighter
  • 1/3 subclass features + 1/2 Oath Spells + Channel Divinity for Paladins
  • 3/4 subclass features + 1/2 Subclass Spells for Ranger
  • 2/4 subclass features for Rogue, Sorcerer
But the majority of these classes have stuff that happens for their subclasses at level 13 or 14... So I am curious if they are going to be more liberal with their application like they have been so far.

This is very helpful though... Thank you!

you know what it makes sense paladins having their oath at level 1, brings them in line with clerics and warlocks, the oath should define you from the get go just as the patrons and deities do

Also to make the other animal spirits more attractive to pick besides Bear 95% of the time, because let's be real, every Totem Barb you see on TT is almost invariably Bear Totem because the other picks are not nearly good enough to replace resistance to nearly all damage.

What I am also interested in is all of the other extra animal picks at 6th level (and others) they teased that aren't from the PHB. Should be interesting.

if it makes the game better as a whole i have no issues with them deviating from being 100% loyal to the dnd 5 rule set

pen and paper can feel very different when you put it in the form of a playable game. some things that seem fine when sitting around a table are kind of ♥♥♥♥ when put in context of a video game.

This isn't a thread about STICK TO THE RULES AS WRITTEN (RAW)... It is more I wish I knew what to expect so I could better design builds for myself - especially when it comes to multiclassing. At this point, I have no real idea of how Larian is going to homebrew things. It seems like there is a lot they are changing but that is okay because it is a different medium.

I think they have considerations in place so players can just go with the flow and not worry about planning too much in advance. Cheaply available respecs certainly helps a lot towards that end.
