Report a translation problem
There are certainly some fun aspects to them, more so 2 than 1, but it does exist. I think the two games are just a bit dated by today.
As for the connection, well it's a continuation of a series, so yes there will be aspects from those games that show up in BG3. Knowing those characters and story will help to some extent, but this story is also taking place a bit of time away from the end of BG2 so they aren't directly connected in that sense.
I'm not certain how much continuity there is without access to the story in its entirety, but whats been teased suggests there will be some at the very least.
Even if I must say lately the pathfinder games are slowly taking that spot.
