You know what else was super popular? Fidget spinners. Where are those now?
Where is 5e now?
Oh right, literally everywhere in popular dnd space. It's been going strong for nearly a decade. People like it, weather you agree or not.
Proof that Gary did not like 3rd edition. He for sure would have appreciated 5th based on his own words.

GameSpy: Have you had a chance to play or even look at some of the current Dungeons & Dragons games?

Gygax: I've looked at them, yes, but I'm not really a fan. The new D&D is too rule intensive. It's relegated the Dungeon Master to being an entertainer rather than master of the game. It's done away with the archetypes, focused on nothing but combat and character power, lost the group cooperative aspect, bastardized the class-based system, and resembles a comic-book superheroes game more than a fantasy RPG where a player can play any alignment desired, not just lawful good.

By his own quote then he would have prefered pathfinder 2 to 5th edition D&D.

You just described all things that are a fad or trendy the only difference with D&D is that it's the latest edition so it's falling in the same trend it's predecessors are only it was boosted for specific circumstances that have nothing to do with natural increased interest.

The more important question is what set of circumstances during it's tenure made 5e popular (you can literally follow a timeline of events) and how likely are those things to remain long term. Anyone of intellect knows that answer including WotC themselves which is why they are trying so hard to monetize everything.

3rd edition is probably the worst of them all.

4th edition sees you and raises you.

Nah. He would have thrown them both out and gone back to any number of OSR titles that actually emulate the kind of gaming he helped start and clearly preferred based on that quote.
I also dislike 5e, however, this game is going to be great. I am excited.

4th edition is really good... if your goal is to make a video game.

It had math issues and was too easy to break to be sure.

But when it comes to character customization its probably one of the better systems ever made.

The sheer amount of classes, subclasses and frequency you got feats was amazing for building exactly what you wanted to and putting a personal touch on your character.
Hence why a ton of people still play it.

Like the saying in my area goes "5e is what we teach noobs or children to get them into the hobby, 3.5 or pathfinder 2e is what they graduate to when they get bored with what 5e has to offer"
3, 3.5 and 4th edition were the furthest thing from an Adequate D&D experience. 5th Edition brought back what the first 2 editions did amazingly well which was the RPing aspect haha

The last edition Gygax saw was 3.5. He knew 4th edition was coming and he just couldn't bear to see it happen so three months before it released he noped out.

That's how bad 4th edition was.... so bad that he literally died.

I knew it. They killed Gygax so he wouldn't crap on their 4e crapshow.

Those bastards.
